Aftermath, Chapter Nine: Racing the clock

"What?" Angel asked.

"I'm going home. They need me." I grabbed my commlink and rose to my feet.  I powered it up and tried to put thoughts into something that resembled rational.

"Tommy, what do you mean 'they need you'?" Angel prodded.  "I thought you were sleeping.  Were you out in the astral?"

"Maybe." I hit the call button and shuffled my restless feet as I waited for an answer.

Sheila answered on the second ring. "Verification."

"Your coffee is drek." I replied.

"Tommy, what's going on?" Sheila asked.

"Move the family, they're compromised.  I'm not sure how yet but hurt is coming."  I looked up at the inquiring faces of Angel, Crank and Ratchet.  "Get as much muscle and magic there as you can. I'll reach out to the girls and be there soon."

Sheila's face took on a look I had last seen when a mob boss had kidnapped Aria.  "Get your ass in gear then Tommy. I'll send everyone I can."

The connection broke and I faced my three chummers.

"One hundred thousand nuyen each.  We go get Aria and the girls and take us all to the Willows. If anything gets in our way, it dies hard."  I grabbed my satchel and retrieved my menpo-styled ballistic mask. "Grab your gear if you're going."

Ratchet opened his mouth as if to speak, but clamped his lips closed and hurried to his dinged up roadmaster. "Drones are loaded and ready to fly.  Crank help me with the ammo belts."

"Will do." Crank replied.  He looked at me and clamped his massive hand on my shoulder.  It hurt. "Don't worry omae, we'll get them out safe and sound."

Angel stared at me.  "What, exactly, do you expect me to do?"

"Same as always, electronic overwatch. Keep your eyes open for movement in the area of operation and all that." I looked at my friend and felt my eyes threaten to tear up. "Please, Angel.  I need your help."

She hugged me.

"Let's go get your family." She whispered.

I brushed the budding tears from my eyes and reached out to the astral plane. "Rose. Lily. Enemies are coming. Where are you girls?"

Five minutes later Ratchet's roadmaster was roaring down the streets.  Traffic signals cycled to green as we approached.  Traffic cameras went dark as we sped past, heading north as fast as we could.

"Traffic systems think we're an ambulance." Angel's synthesized voice came over my earpiece.  "We're clear all the way to Everette on the I-5."

We hit the ramp up onto the potholed old interstate at more than one hundred KPH.  "Where the 'ell is all the traffic?" Ratchet asked.

"Traffic systems are diverting everyone around.  I've flagged a maintenance lane closure, so even automated patrols won't be on." Angel's reply spoke volumes toward the amount of work she had accomplished in remarkably little time.  "Don't spare the horsepower, Ratchet. You're all clear."

I lurched in my seat as the roadmaster suddenly accelerated. "OH, YEAH BABY!" Ratchet howled over the comms.  "I COULD GET USED TO THIS!"

Crank chambered a round in his pink light machine gun.  "We'll get there soon Tommy.  Don't worry, this is a good gun.  If anyone raises a hand to them, I'll blow it off."

"Patching in Sheila." Angel announced.

"Put her through." I replied. "We're en route.  ETA is... Ratchet?"

"Thirty minutes, tops."

"ETA is thirty minutes by land.  Rose and Lily report no contacts." I offered.

"You're sure this is necessary?" Sheila asked.

"I am."

"That's good enough for me. We're catching up but you're ahead of us a good bit." Sheila left the connection open.

We hurtled down the I-5, with Ratchet screaming like a berserker as he assaulted the pavement. For fifteen minutes we careened over wrecked pavement, blurred past highway signs and brought me ever closer to Aria and the girls.  "We're coming up on 128th, hang on!"

I bounced off the seat in front of me as Ratchet braked hard.  The roadmaster swerved violently to the right and down the off-ramp at more than three times the recommended speed before spinning hard to the left and bouncing me off the passenger side door.  Crank and Angel kept their seats by the four-point harnesses they had belted into.

"Angel, talk to me.  How are we looking?" Ratchet asked.

"We're clear all the way to 112th.  Traffic cams are out at the intersection, can't see anything so stay alert.  I've got multiple contacts coming up behind us though, looks like the 'Fivers." Angel's electronically generated voice didn't betray any concern.  Crank glanced back at the armored doors and I heard a squeak as his grip tightened on his weapon.

"How many of them, Angel?" I asked.

"I think, maybe all of them." She replied.  "Pulling drone feed now."

I opened the AR window that blinked read for me and saw dozens of hard faced elves on sleek looking motorcycles racing our way.  "Thanks, Angel.  Everyone get your game face on."  I pulled off my AR goggles and pulled my ballistic mask down over my face.  My fingers found the tracery over the mask and I pushed a touch of mana into the pattern. Shade's formula had been incredibly difficult to enchant but as we sped toward Aria and the girls I felt the mask's well of power come alive.

"They're closing fast." Angel said. "At this rate they'll be able to reach out and touch us in two minutes."

"Ratchet, float the rotor-drones.  Maybe we can spook them away." I replied.

The roadmaster's back door swung up and the first roto-drone came to life.  The dual rotors lifted it smoothly from its launch rack and carried it out into the night.  "Launching.  Stay clear of the rotors everyone."

I was staring out toward the horde of oncoming elves when I felt Rose's touch on my mind. "Father! We have enemies here!

"Ratchet!  How long until we're there?" I yelled out over the wind and rotor noise.

"Ten minutes, maybe more depending on those gangers." He called back.

The second rotor-drone took off into the night.  Ten minutes was far too long. "Proceed on target. If these assholes start anything, put them down.  I'm going ahead."  The air elemental appeared at the open door.  I jumped into its swirling winds as the pavement blurred beneath me. The spirit lifted me above the roaring armored behemoth and we streaked through the night.

I opened myself to Rose's senses.  I saw a bullet riddled door, heard the staccato of automatic weapon fire and smelled pizza.  Behind her, Lilly was carrying Jasmine and Violet into a panic room hidden behind a flight of stairs.  Aria came in behind her, a shotgun cradled in her arms.  The door closed seamlessly behind them, leaving no evidence of its existence.

Lily materialized into view her body shifting its form from that of a small elf girl to that of an avenging angel.  Wings sprouted into view as Rose's form shifted as well.

"We will do violence!" Rose and Lily's voices rang out in my mind. I shifted my perception back to my own body and saw the telltale ribbon flashes of weapon fire on the street ahead and below me.  Dozens of armed assailants were firing into the house that held my family.

My earpiece was filled with chatter as Angel, Crank, Ratchet and Sheila were speaking in hurried voices.  I ignored them, my anger deafening whatever they were saying as I picked a point in the middle of the strangely crowded street, tapped the mana of my power focus mask and cast my hands forward with a scream I imagined them hearing from a hundred meters away.

"MORTUORUM EGO CREO! IGNIS MAGICAE!!

Flames exploded fifteen meters into the sky in a column thirty meters wide.  Flames washed over the ruined buildings and splashed along the walls of the house where my family hid. Dozens of gunmen died in an instant. The plascrete melted and exploded in a fury of fire of death.

I had announced my arrival, given away my location and fell right into the trap that had been laid for me

0500 hours, Seattle Metroplex local time

Jasmine and Violet were crying pitifully.  I rolled out of bed as Aria stirred. "I've got them honey, you can sleep."  I kissed her on the cheek and padded into the hall.

"I believe they are hungry as they are not stinky.  I will prepare the bottles." Rose's thought voice reached me as I entered their room.  Lily was standing watch in the astral, watching for any threats to the children {Honestly, I'm not paranoid.  Why take chances?}  The girls were dry, clean, and fussy.  I picked each of them up and saw them gumming away.  Yep, hungry.

Rose came in a few minutes later with two bottles, both at perfect temperature.  "Thank you, Rose. That is a great help." I opened my astral sight and beheld Lily, standing watch over the girls' room like a guardian angel, wings and all. "Thank you, Lily. I really appreciate all that you two do.  You're great help with the twins, and it gives me great peace of mind to know that Aria, Jasmine and Violet are safe with the two of you."

"Your gratitude is welcome and unnecessary," Lily replied. "I will keep you and the family safe."

"You're welcome," Rose added, "Aria says we are family and that family loves and protects one another.  Lily, Jasmine and Violet are my sisters.  Isn't that correct?"

I nodded to her as I rocked my daughters while a little telekinesis spell held the bottles for me. "We are a family.  Some people may not agree, but I brought you and Lily into this world so I feel responsible for you.  I had my reasons for bringing you both forth, that is certain.  I want to be the best wizard I can be, and a powerful ally spirit is a wonderful step in that direction.  I am a criminal with a dangerous job.  Sometimes I fight monstrous beings and having you two to watch my back is a fantastic relief.  Now, being married and the twins being here, I don't know what I would do without you two.  You'll both be here long after I'm dead and gone.  I only hope you'll remember me fondly in the ages yet to come."  Violet put her little hands up so I bent my head down and kissed her little fingers.  "If I died tomorrow, I know I left the world a better place than I found it.  I know that because all of you are so much more than I ever imagined I would accomplish and the world is a much better place because you are all here."

"You should take us to work more often," Lily offered. "it would be safer for you."

"I know, Lily. I just don't like having you two away from the house."  I took Jasmine's bottle and rubbed her back to burp her. "I like knowing the family is safe."

"Aria, mommy, worries about you when you go away for work." Rose told me. "Lily and I worry as well.  Jasmine and Violet are happier when you are here.  They enjoy the sensation of levitating."

Rose and Lily both smiled down at me. In my arms, the twins sucked at their bottles without a care in the world.

"Is there room in the family for more of us?" Lily asked.

"Mommy says she thinks so." Rose replied.  "If you don't wish to take Lily or I with you, consider summoning another."

"Another sister would be welcome." Lily said thoughtfully.

"Or the male version. They call them 'brothers', I'm told." Rose told her. "I am helping Lily with the social interactions. She does not like my cooking though, I'm afraid."

"I prefer the food made my he who is called 'Solomon'.  You're food is not as pleasant." Lily replied.

"You have not had food prepared by father." Rose's voice had a hint of laughter behind it.

I found myself smiling.  "Okay, you two.  I'm not in a hurry to make the family any larger yet, but I hear what you're saying.  There are a number of things I can do to give me an edge.  Bringing you two into the world, well, those were the most difficult magical operations I've undertaken.  There are a few other things I should do before bringing another ally spirit to the world."

"The dog is in the yard again." Lily said, suddenly serious. "I shall disperse him."

I looked at Rose who smiled and said, "The neighbors dog drops stinky piles on the grass in our yard.  Aria does not like it, so Lily takes offense and urges the dog to leave."

There was a sound like thunder outside.

"She doesn't hurt the dog, does she?" I asked, suddenly concerned.

"No.  The dog isn't scared of her, so she makes noises the dog doesn't like.  He is afraid of thunder, so she makes the sound and he runs home." Rose added proudly, "That was my idea.  The first time she went out to confront him, he licked her repeatedly and left the stinky pile anyway.  Sometimes I go out and bark at him.  He is smaller than I am, and usually runs off."

I burped the girls and changed their suddenly wet diapers.  Rose took Lily into the kitchen and the two of them went to work on creating breakfast for the rest of us.  I lay Jasmine and Violet on the rug and played with them, enjoying the coos and little gurgling sounds they made.  The smell of sausages and brewing coffee made my stomach growl.  The twins got quiet for a moment, their little faces turned up as if they were thinking very hard about something of earth-shattering importance.

I heard a pair of tiny squeaks, and grew fearful for their diapers.  Sure enough, it was time to change them again.

"Something stinky," Lily and Rose said in tandem.

"I've got it." I told them.

Breakfast was done at 0620.  I woke Aria and received a kiss to 'start my day off right'.  Our morning meal was bright and fun for me.  Jasmine and Violet slept through breakfast giving Aria and I a little time together.  Lily and Rose took the twins to their room, and Aria and I had a talk about work.  I didn't lie to her.  I told her I had been to a hell-like metaplane and fought a demon and several demonic creatures.  She took that in with a remarkable calm that shocked me.  The things she was accustomed to hearing from me already!

"I shouldn't have to tell Lily and Rose to go to you." Aria stirred her coffee while she looked at me with worried eyes.  "I love them, but you need them more out there than I need them here. What would we all have done if you had died, Tommy?"

"Aria, I'm sorry honey. I wanted them here to protect you and the girls.  I want you to have help.  I'll be fine." I took her hand and felt a tremble there.

"I was scared, Tommy. You've been working a lot and the things I hear from you are terrifying." She lifted my hand and kissed the back of it. "These new scars.  You used magic to heal your hand before you came home a few weeks ago."

"Actually, I healed it after I came home." I had promised her I wouldn't lie to her. "I got hurt in an explosion.  Rose helped me when I got home."

"We all love you, Tommy." Aria kissed me then rested her forehead against mine. "Once this contract is over, I don't want you signing back up.  Hell with the money, we were fine before this and we can do just fine without it."

"Exactly what I was thinking." I wrapped my arms around her and felt tears streak down my cheeks. I don't know why I was crying but I knew my wife loved me.

We took the twins outside that afternoon and let them get some sun. Aria and I took turns pushing the stroller. I looked around at the carefully tended lawns and well maintained houses.  My parents would have been happy for me to be living there.

We passed the home of a middle-aged ork couple.  They were welcoming family and judging from the smell and smoke wafting up from the back yard they were getting ready for a bar-b-que.  I waved to them as we passed and was reward with a tusky smile and a wave back.  They seemed like nice people and had given Rose a pat on the head to go with the large handful of candy they put in her Halloween bag.  The neighborhood was full of the sound of children laughing, sunshine  poking through thin cloud cover, and the smell of grilling foods.

The weekend passed too quickly.  I called Crank Saturday night and we made plans for him to meet up with me the next weekend.  I talked to Aria about it and she put in a larger grocery order for the Friday delivery.  I spent my time with my family, soaking in joy from the little smiles Jasmine and Violet made when I ran my hand over their thin hair or tickled their pointy ears, and playing catch with Lily and Rose in the back yard.  I laughed at jokes Aria told me, and held her closely each night, cherishing the scent of honeysuckle and vanilla.

"You make sure to come home to me, Tommy." Aria told me. "You have my heart you know."

"And you have mine." I kissed her and drifted off to sleep.

The twins woke me two hours later.

Spirit of Seattle

July 19th, 2059

0700 hours

I had the windows open and the rain outside gave the world that fresh, clean smell.  The grass around my house was growing up nicely. (Seriously, can ANYONE tell me why we call those areas 'yards'?) It was a gentle, refreshing rain and I just stood there and listened to it fall.  I heard the floor creak behind me and caught the scent of honeysuckle and vanilla as Aria's arms wrapped around me.

"Good morning," she yawned. "Did you make breakfast yet?"

I smiled and said, "You are the bravest woman I know.  How do you stand my cooking?"

"It's the thought behind it, not the flavor." She paused a moment, then added "Though it may be a good idea to teach you a few things."

I turned and looked into her eyes, "I'll do my best to stop burning the bacon." I kissed her on the forehead and we walked into the kitchen to confront the menace that was my cooking.

Aria nibbled on the very crisp bacon (honestly, it was a little burned), ate her eggs with no complaint, and confronted my attempt at grits with lots of butter.  "That's my guy," she chuckled, "great and powerful magician, romantic boyfriend, and apprentice cook."

"I don't think I rate 'apprentice' yet but thank you." I replied.  The meal was horrid, but I ate it.  If Aria could be polite enough to eat what I prepared I could bite the bullet and do the same.  Though swallowing bullets may have been easier.  "Are you working tonight?"

Aria nodded as she struggled to swallow a nibble of bacon, "Yes, I'm closing with Sandy. I need to go home for a while and take care of some laundry." She looked at me hopefully, "Fly me over?"

I gave her a thoughtful look, "After you ate this?  I think you deserve it."  We finished eating what we could of the food I had abused then spent an hour playing through our AR-MMORPG.  Our troupe was planning an event later that evening but with Aria working I wasn't particularly interested in playing through that.  She and I ran through a quest, confronted the demonic lord of the Eastern Islands, and were killed repeatedly.  It was a fun time.  When we were done, Aria made sandwiches which we packed up for our flight over to her place.  We went the long way, the very long way, by flying out over Puget Sound then skirted south of Ft. Lewis. We banked east and then flew in a lazy arc for a few miles to her building.  It was a fun flight punctuated by moments of laughter from each of us.

I saw Aria to her door, kissed her fiercely, then took my leave.

*****

I landed in my back yard under cover of invisibility. The ground was damp from the morning rain, and the clean smell after a fresh rain was being replaced by the odors of the city wafting up from Seattle proper.  I checked the wards on my house and found them exactly as they should be, then accessed the security system Angel had put in for me.  It wasn't convenient, but it gave me piece of mind.  I wandered through my house, my astral sight open, as I checked for any unwelcome visitors.  I was being cautious, or maybe paranoid, but it was a routine I had fallen into and I was comfortable with. No one had broken in while I was away.  The kitchen still bore the echoes of breakfast.  Affection and humor lingered at the table and I could just catch the faintest hint of honeysuckle and vanilla in the air.  I finished my circuit of the house, made certain all the locks were secure, then headed down into my basement to get to work.

I had been devising a formula for the summoning of my very own ally spirit, what some people would refer to as a 'familiar'.  Having done a great deal of research on the subject I was suffering an unfortunate side effect.  I knew of so many traits an ally spirit could have that I was having trouble defining which I would like for my ally spirit.  I had been introduced to a traditional hermetic magician whose ally spirit could take the form of an automobile, a street shaman I knew partnered with an ally spirit that took the form of a young Salish girl, and one magician I had read about had conjured an ally spirit which could assume the form of women of each known meta-type.  The options for what forms an ally could take were seemingly limitless and it presented me with so many options I was having difficulty deciding.  I had decided that I did want the spirit to have multiple forms it could assume, a vehicle seemed useful (and would save me some of the charges I was racking up with my car service), different meta-types and appearances would help conceal a relationship with the spirit when I had to change my identity again. Something low profile, like a small inanimate object, would be handy for bringing the spirit with me discreetly.

Ally spirits can have a wide range of abilities as well.  They can evoke spirit powers, cast spells, and utilize skills you teach them during the summoning.  I knew several spells I would like my ally spirit to have access to. Most of those were to save my own hoop if things went pear-shaped, while a few were just generally useful in everyday life.  I also wanted the spirit to be powerful.  Let's face it, in my line of work you must be prepared for bad things to happen.  I wanted a spirit powerful enough to help me to stay alive the next time I crossed paths with a vampire or {shudder} the next time I faced off against one of the dark spirits that had animated the dead.

My work on the formula was delicate and precise work.  I had created an outline of abilities, spirit mana expression calculations, fourth dimensional physics models, and a collection of images I liked for the spirit's appearance.  I had been working on the ritual design for most of two weeks but there was still a great deal to do.  I was carefully incorporating a healing spell into the ritual matrix when the alarm on my pocket secretary went off.

I turned the alarm off and marveled at the time, 2130.  I had spent my afternoon and early evening at the work and time had slipped away from me.  I showered and pulled on my form fitting body armor.  I dressed for the hot weather and a low profile.  Good jeans, a grey shirt and my rescue rated combat boots wouldn't stand out.  I added my low-profile concealed holster for my viper sliver gun.  I chambered a round but left the safety on.  I wove an invisibility spell around myself, checked the locks and wards, then stepped out into the backyard. My air elemental carried me out to Redmond and the Brick Yard.

I landed in the parking lot and let the invisibility spell unravel as I walked around to the front entrance.  Little Rickie nodded at me when he saw me turn the corner, he reached for the door then asked, "Any vampires around?"

I paused for a moment and focused on the web of detection spells I had layered upon myself.  "No Rickie, no vampires or ghouls about." The large man nodded and opened the door for me.  I checked my sidearm inside and made my way to the bar.  Sandy slid a tall lemonade in front of me and gave me a grin. "Saw you coming," she said.

"Thanks Sandy you're the best." I said.

"Are you eating today?" she asked.

"Oh God yes," I replied. "Aria recommends the filet mignon, what do you think?"

"Out of my price range, but I'm told its great." She shrugged her broad shoulders. "Wanna try?"

I gave her a nod, "Yeah, ask Solomon to fix mine the same way Aria likes hers. Add on one for you and three more for the kiddos.  And,"

"Triple shot of the best rum for Solomon?" she interrupted.

"Yes ma'am," I said.  I turned my attention to the trideo as Sandy strode away.  I savored my lemonade and watched the news feed.  Soccer was dominating the news that night as was more speculation on the corporate court and who was going to sit where. A preview of a new show was cycling up, apparently it was about a Lone Star detective who fights evil sorcerers while battling his own personal demons. I decided I didn't want to see that and turned on my stool to look for a familiar face.

"What's up baby?" Aria asked.  She had been walking up behind me.

Her smile was contagious. I found myself grinning back at her, "Nothing honey, I just don't think I like modern trideo.  Give me those old flatvids anytime."

"They are fun.  I can't wait to see the rest of those witch hunter cartoons. Her hair is cool and I love the coat!"  She gave me a kiss then bounced away to take bottles of beer and glasses of liquor to other patrons. I imagined her in the long black coat with her hair done up. I have to admit, it was an interesting image.

Crank walked in, saw me at the bar, walked over and sat down on the stool next to me.  "Oi, what's up little elf mage?"

"Crank, good to see you omae."

"I got a question for you if you have time," he said.

"Sure thing chummer," I replied. "What's up?"

"I used to know this magician.  Wizard really.  Young guy but sharp," he paused for a moment. "Anyway, he used magic to make himself tougher and faster. It was sort of like cyber reflex enhancement, but by magic."

I felt bad for hiding from my chummer in plain sight.  "Yeah, that's tough stuff but useful.  I use a bit of that myself."

"Yeah," he waved Sandy over and ordered a pitcher of dark beer. "well, my question is, can just magicians do that?  Can you not, I don't know, put the spell on someone else and make them faster?"

I thought about that a moment. "I think it may be possible," it was an intriguing idea. "I think you would want to anchor the spell, so it didn't fizzle when you weren't looking at it.  I think you could, perhaps, devise a technique that allows you to weave a self-sustaining mana loop to make the spell permanent on another person.  Maybe a tattoo or a brand and enchant it. I heard a rumor about something like that. Supposedly, some of the Yakuza sorcerers can enchant tattoos, but I've never actually seen it."

Crank seemed pensive, "Yaks aren't exactly famous for being troll friendly."

"No. No, they aren't," I replied. "But if a Yakuza sorcerer has discovered that technique then it's something I expect others could learn to do."

"Yeah, but magicians aren't easy to come by." Crank's beer arrived and he drained half the pitcher in one long pull.  "If I can find someone to do it, how much do you think it would cost?"

"I don't know," I told him.  "I think part of it would be what you wanted done and how hard it was to cast upon you in the first place.  Then there would be the matter of what costs might be inherent in the method used to hold the spells in place.  What kind of spell were looking for omae?"

Crank wiped at his mouth. "I want to get that magic like Tommy had.  He was fast chummer. He was really fast. I'd get the cyber but the doctor says if I get it installed I won't be able to get much more after that.  I wouldn't want to get it done only to find out that I can't get an artificial heart if I ever happen to need one.  I thought, that if I could get it by magic, it would be better."

I followed his logic and I couldn't deny it. "I think that is a great point chummer.  I don't know how to do it, but I can ask around.  If I can figure it out we can talk about getting it done. How much does the cyber cost?" I asked him then took a drink of my lemonade.

Crank told me, I choked, then lemonade shot out of my nose.  Just so you know, it felt like it was burning through my sinuses. "Are you fraggin' kidding me!?!?" I coughed and wheezed and blew my nose as hard as I could.  The lemonade tortured my sinuses and Crank laughed at me.

"Yeah omae, I thought the same.  It's fraggin' expensive and you have to have permits for them if their legally installed." Crank shook his head.  "I'm not liking that idea.  Good way to get pinched by the 'Star."

"I'll keep my eyes and ears open for you chummer.  I'll be careful about it. I wouldn't want someone casting something on you that you didn't want." I stepped down from my stool. "Hold on Crank, I'm going to the restroom to clear my head.  I'll be back, save my seat."

When I came back Sandy was bringing out my steak.  Crank was eyeing it so I ordered the same for him. "My treat, Crank" I told him.

"Thanks, chummer" he ordered another pitcher of beer.

The rest of my night went much better.  Crank drank quite a bit and was telling jokes by 2330 hours.  He had a new joke about a Ares weapon salesman and a priest that had me laughing so hard my sides stitched.  Aria visited me when she could, and I promised her a flight home if she wanted. Her smile was all the answer I needed.

"Mind if I stay over?" she asked.

"I'd be crazy to say 'no'."

I put a very drunk Crank in an SUV that Ratchet was kind enough to send.  It cost me, but you don't leave a chummer drunk in the Barrens. "You're alrigh' omae," Crank slurred at me.  The vehicle whisked him away shortly before 0200. Aria and I were walking into my house shortly before 0300.  The security system and wards were intact, and my sweep of the house showed me that no one had been in since I left.

"Any plans for the evening?" Aria asked coyly.

I had a sudden inspiration, "Yes, indeed honey." I winked at her. "Why don't you go grab a drink and I'll run a bath for you."  Aria gave me a mischievous grin as she wandered into the kitchen.

I ran a bubble bath for Aria and treated her as best I knew how. Being a waitress is hard on several muscle groups, so I massaged her arms and shoulders, then spent time rubbing down her calves and feet. She let out little moans of relief as her body relaxed.  I invoked a little magic and released a healing spell into her tired muscles.

"Oh, you are definitely spoiling me." Her eyes were closed, and she had a smile on her face. "A lady could get used to this."

"Well, you work hard. I was just working in the lab today." I grabbed the shampoo and set to washing her hair for her.

"Oh no, you cannot wash my hair if you aren't going to make it a regular event, " her playful scolding made me laugh.

"I can't make it a regular event. You aren't here every night." I laughed.

Aria sat up and looked at me. "Do you want me here every night?"

I thought about it for a moment. "I would love to have you here every night.  I just wonder if it's safe for you. And I'm probably not the easiest to live with. I mean, I work in the lab a lot, and my 'other' work takes me away pretty often." She looked me right in the eye and I blurted out, "Yes, I want you here every night."

Aria threw her arms around me, splashing water and bubbles all over me. "I want that too, Tommy, my beautiful idiot."

We slept well that night.

I had a nerve-wracking meeting at the Aria's place two nights later.  Aria and I talked to Sheila about Aria moving in with me.  I didn't want my best fixer mad at me, particularly Sheila as I knew first-hand how protective she was of her 'little girl'.  I was pleasantly surprised when Sheila X, bad-ass fixer, super protective mother, and the woman I once saw shove a heavy pistol down a man's throat smiled and said, "It's about time."

*****

Aria had her stuff moved in before August.  We made some adjustments, with me changing the furniture in the bedroom to include a larger dresser and I made room in the closet for her clothes there too.  I had an extra room I had used for storage, but I pulled out the handful of boxes I had there and we turned that space into a reading room.  The house started feeling more like home.

I kept up my work in the lab as I continued to devise the ritual formula for my ally spirit. I talked to Aria about my plan for the familiar spirit and she listened attentively.  She had a lot of questions. "Where will it sleep?  Do you have to feed it?  What will it do while we're sleeping? It will have different forms, you mean like those aliens from the cartoon?"  There were a lot of things she wanted to clarify.  I explained that the spirit would be bound to me permanently and that it would mean I would have extra back up when I went 'to work'.  I also pointed out that it would mean extra protection for us at home.  I showed her some of the images I had in mind for the forms the spirit could take and was pleasantly surprised by some of her suggestions.

"The meta-human forms are all male. You should make them female so you can have the spirit on your arm if I'm not available and you have to meet with a 'client' in a social setting.  A sports car stands out, wouldn't a Ford Americar be more low-profile? Can one form be a dog? I always wanted a dog." I took her suggestions to heart and began to redesign the ritual.

I picked up Aria every night and brought her home.  We found our routine within a few weeks.  I would show up an hour or so before she got off and either watch the trid or, if a chummer was about I would hang out a bit.  Then Aria and I would fly home, taking different routes as the mood hit us.  I'd run a bath for her and we'd talk about work I had done in the lab that day and she would catch me up on any interesting rumors going around.

Those first weeks of August saw a lot of runs against Wuxing and Renraku but I didn't work any of them.  There were a few other magicians working the scene out of the Brick Yard by that time.  Creep was getting a lot of work. Though few people liked him, he was brutally effective if you needed magical mayhem.  Another wizard called Shade was making a name for himself as well.  Far more likable, smart, talented, powerful and discrete, you didn't hear much about Shade unless you were in the biz.  Whereas Creep was fond of burning places to the ground, Shade was smart and slick, getting into places through brains and leaving little to no trace behind.  I told Sheila I wasn't going to be available for a while as I was working on a delicate magical operation.  Sheila was fine with that and asked that I let her know when I was ready to work again.

*****

I walked into the house and turned on the lights.

"Hi honey!" Aria cried out to me. "I'm so glad you're home."  Aria hurried to me, a bundle of some kind in her arms.  I heard a baby begin to cry. "Oh, she's up.  Hurry, wash up and help me with her. She's missed her daddy."

I dashed to the bathroom and hit the lights.  They came on in glaring brilliance revealing a streak of blood I had left along the switch.  I turned to the sink and saw myself in the mirror.  Black smudges marred my face. My viper sliver gun rode in my shoulder holster, blood caked the grip and my hands were covered in blood up to the elbows.  I turned on the water, drops of crimson falling into the sink.  I grabbed the soap and scrubbed furiously but I couldn't get the blood off.  I turned up the water temperature until is threatened to scald me but try as I might, the blood clung to my hands. I couldn't get it off.

"Tommy?" I heard Aria as if from far away.  "Tommy, baby, are you okay?"

I jolted awake, standing in front of my sink.  The water was steaming up the mirror.  I was naked, sweaty, and my hands were covered in soap suds.  I turned to Aria, "I'm sorry honey, I guess I was walking in my sleep."

Aria placed her hands on my face. "You're crying baby what's wrong?"

I looked into her beautiful, worried eyes and lied, "Just a bad dream honey. I'm fine."  She hugged me, and I held her tightly.  "I'm fine honey, really."

I didn't feel like going back to sleep, and Aria seemed to sense that.  She took me into the living room and turned on the trid. I sat down, and she disappeared into the kitchen for a few minutes, emerging with two cups of hot cocoa topped with marshmellows. We watched century old flatvid cartoons about a rabbit that tricked and abused a human hunter who seemed to be cursed by a speech impediment, until the sun came up.

August 21st, 2059

I took the ritual formula and inspected the summoning circle.  It was the most complex working I had ever attempted.  The circle was inscribed with dozens of arcane diagrams.  I had centered the circle beneath the small glowing orb that poured magical energy into the local astral space.  The circle's components were carefully arrayed.  I checked and re-checked each element.  I couldn't find a single flaw.

At 0900 hours, local Seattle time, I lit a dozen enchanted candles and began the summoning rite.  My words rang out, echoing within the circle.  Silver light rose from the arcane diagrams, and the air buzzed with barely constrained power. The energy building within the circle made the air feel alive with static, and the scent of ozone mixed with the candle smoke.

Hours passed. I was channeling potent magical forces as I called forth the ally I sought and empowered it. My ritual carved a piece of my own magical energies away, imbuing the spirit with great power and binding it to me forever.  I held the ritual formula of my ally spirit and poured out mana, holding the complexities of the spirit in my mind as I sculpted the magical energy.

Night fell, and my ritual reached a crescendo.  "Come forth spirit of my will, journey with me my ally, take this power I offer and serve as my familiar, I invoke thee!"  I collapsed as a piece of my magical talent was sliced away to merge with the spirit energies erupting in my basement laboratory.  The spirit took shape, its first form clearly visible.

My ally looked human and stood two meters tall.  She had black hair, pale white skin, and dark intimidating eyes.  As I watched she changed, becoming an elf woman with chestnut hair, amber eyes, and flawless brown skin.  The spirit changed again and became a black rottweiler with a brown chest and belly.  The spirit continued to reveal the forms I had empowered it with, taking the shape of a winged angel, a small gold ring, a motorcycle, a young blonde elf girl, an ornate carpet, and a pegasus.  When she finally resumed her pale human form I heard her voice enter my mind.

"I am here," it said. Unlike Mr. Johnson's skull ringing invasions of my mind, this communication was comfortable and felt natural.

"Welcome great spirit," I said.  "I have summoned you to aid me. I will treat you with respect and kindness. If you agree, I will call you 'Rose'."

The spirit contemplated me a moment. "I am Rose.  Thank you for the gifts you have bestowed upon me."  Rose walked out of the circle and looked me in the eye. "How may I serve you?"

2230 hours

Rose and I slipped out to the backyard. She took on her pegasus form and I climbed upon her back. I wove an invisibility spell over us and we took to the sky.  I felt drained, incredibly tired, and a bit weak but the thrill of flying was enough to bring a smile to my face.  We landed at the Brick Yard and I let the invisibility spell unravel from around us.

"Rose, I want to take you inside with me.  Please take the form of the gold ring.  I'll wear you inside and introduce you to Aria"  I asked.  Pegasus Rose shimmered, and a small gold ring took her place.  The ring hovered in the air until I grabbed it and placed it on my finger.  I could feel the raw power of the spirit against my bare skin.

I walked around to the front. Little Rickie opened the door and for the first time I walked into the Brick Yard with Rose.

*****

Afterword

Aria fell in love with Rose almost immediately.  Aria was, in many ways, the mother Rose could never have. It took time for Rose's personality to develop, much like it takes years for a child's personality to reveal itself.

No, 'Rose' isn't her true name.  That's a secret I'll take to my grave.  She has been by my side ever since and I love her like she's my own child.  That isn't to say that we haven't had our arguments over the years, because we certainly have.  But we are allies, and we'll fight the whole world together if we must.

Date night

{Date Night occurs soon after Family ~ Love and revenge in the Shadows of Seattle. Sometimes things go according to plan. Or, almost according to plan.}
______________________________________________________________________________

'No plan survives first contact with the enemy" ~ Helmuth van Moltke

February 2059

I was twenty years old.

I had faked my own death, again, and was starting over under a new identity.  I bought the house I had previously lived in.  I liked the house, the neighborhood was nice, and there was a source of magical energy in the basement. Sometimes astral entities would drop by uninvited, but I took that as part of the place's charm (of note, it was a pain in the ass at times).

A lot of work went into my new identity. I was a registered and licensed magician, a UCAS citizen, and had a tax and credit history.  The electronic records showed I was a freelance magician.  It was a great identity that didn't require me to remember a lot of odd facts, and was a life I could live in comfortably.  Staying 'in character' wouldn't be hard.

It took some time to become accustomed to being taller and a slightly broader elf. I also had much lighter skin, and with the platinum blonde hair I had a somewhat idealized appearance. I picked up a new wardrobe, with several business appropriate suits. I also had to buy new body armor, but those are the little things that sneak up on you anytime you start a new life that involves a shapechange spell to alter your appearance.

I had made dinner reservations for Valentine's Day. I had a date with Aria.

February 12th, 2059

1235 hours (local Seattle time):  What do you get a lady for Valentine's day?  I had some problems shopping for a good gift.  It was unseasonably cold and very windy, which didn't help my shopping efforts. I left a jewelry shop, that had done its best to devour me, and walked in to a nearby lore store. They were doing a brisk business is selling fake 'love' potions which were little more than herbal libido enhancers.  There were a lot of teenage boys in the lore shop. (Many of you reading this are likely surprised by this nonsense. Don't be, it happens every year since lore shops became 'legitimate' after the awakening.)  I was looking for nothing in particular, taking a break from thinking about Valentine's Day and gifts.

I avoided the "love potion" and "male enhancement" crowd and skirted over to the selection of books in print.  There weren't any books on display that I wanted.  I wandered about the shop, taking in the magic themed products, and drifting over to look at the real treasures kept behind the locked ballistic glass.  Expensive reagents, folios of spell formula, treaties on astral theory, and books on awakened pets shared space with minor spell foci. There was a beautiful ring with a seventy-five thousand nuyen price tag, "That would certainly send the wrong signals," I told myself.

I left the lore store before one of the clerks could corner me.  Outside the cold and the damp drove me into the next store with a Valentine's Day themed advert. As it happens, none of the stores had anything I thought Aria might like.  I managed to pick up a bottle of champagne and a box of organic chocolate caramels.  It was a start.

1634 hours: my car service dropped me off at my house.  I waved to my neighbor as I made my way inside.  I locked my door up behind me and checked the security system. I walked through the house, taking in the new furniture for what must have been the tenth time since I "moved in".  The place looked a bit different, but it was still home.

I ate and sent a text message to Aria "I've confirmed our reservations. I'll pick you up at 1700. Still good for then?"

Aria:  "Sounds perfect, where are we going again?" she had been fishing for information on where we were going and what we were doing for a week.  I kept her in the dark but I did recommend that she bring a warm coat, and dress as if we were going to the Space Needle.

"Oh, we're going somewhere I haven't told you of yet.  Don't worry I think you'll like the surprise"

February 13th, 2059

I had an epiphany as I ate breakfast. I hit the car service app and scheduled a pick up just before noon. My trip downtown was uneventful, but I found and picked up a pair of gifts for Aria.  I had them wrapped in a white gift box and tied with a red ribbon (its traditional I'm told).  It was a good feeling, having the gifts covered. I called and confirmed my reservations, verified my car service data, and went over the plan for the evening.  Everything seemed to be in order, and I was beginning to feel a bit excited about pulling off a happy Valentine's Day holiday.

February 14th, 2059

I spent the morning cleaning my house, and the afternoon cleaning up for my evening.  This was my first date with Aria since her ordeal and I wanted everything to be perfect.  My car arrived five minutes early. I shrugged into my suit jacket, donned my cape, then headed to the car with the Aria's gift in hand. I was half-way across town when I realized I had left the chocolates and champagne at home.

I sent a text from the car, "See you soon"

"Almost ready" she replied.

I had upgraded for the evening. My car service had provided a Euro Westwind and I have to admit, I liked it.  It was a comfortable ride, immaculately clean, and had a faint scent of old leather.  I rang the door on Aria's building at 1700, precisely, and was met with "Come on in, I'll be ready in a minute." from the speaker.  Aria's voice held an excitement to it that made me smile.  The door was new, and opened easily when Aria buzzed me in.  I had never been in her building before.  There was an elevator to my left and a stairway on my right.  Aria lived on the first floor, so I walked down the wide, clean hall and found her number.  I knocked, and Sheila X opened the door.

Uh-oh. For some reason I had not expected to see Sheila that night.  She opened the door and I walked in.  I stood there for an oddly uncomfortable moment, when Sheila let me off the hook saying "She's going to be a minute. Where are you taking her?"

I didn't like the idea of trying to tell Sheila X that it was "a surprise". I thought, given recent events, that would have been unwise. I glanced around, then leaned in and said "The Gray Line, lower floor reservations and a great table.  Think she'll like it?"

Sheila X nodded.  "Good choice, she won't expect it and its really nice. I took her there for her birthday last year and she loved it." It was at that moment that I realized I had no idea how old Aria was or when her birthday was. I made a mental note to ask, but on another day.

"Sub-zero. I asked her to bring a good coat too.  I summoned up a pair of air spirits and I thought I would take her for a flight around the city after dinner." It was really weird to be talking to Sheila X, while waiting for her daughter to finish getting ready. She may have been preparing to respond, but Aria interrupted.

"Sorry, I'm ready now" Aria had walked in quietly. I turned, and she was simply stunning. She wore a red dress, with a gold chain that held a small opal pendant.  Her long coat was black with silver accents.  She had her hair worn up in an elaborate pattern of woven locks and a pair of opal studs adorned her ears.  I may have stared for a moment.

"Have fun honey." Sheila said. "I'm going to work."

*****

Aria and I talked the entire way to the restaurant. She asked about my haircut and I asked how long it took to get her hair done. We both laughed when I told her about the folks at the lore store buying "love potions", and she confessed she changed outfits twice before I got there. I told her she looked beautiful and she told me she liked my new ears.

When we arrived at The Gray Line, I opened the door, produced an umbrella, and we walked in fifteen minutes early for our reservation.  We had champagne at the bar, and she laughed as I tried to tell her a joke in Sperethiel. {In all honesty, she laughed at my terrible Sperethiel, not the joke. I botched it up terribly ~T}

We had one of the best tables in the place.  The lower level is always below the waterline and you can see the marine life through the glass.  A violinist came, right on time, and played for us through our salad course.  A pair of otters swam by and looked at us as our steaks came.  I waved to the little critters and Aria laughed at me. The otters swam about for a moment, beautiful little furry creatures at home in the water.  It was peaceful, fun, and a bit romantic.

We ordered desert and were enjoying more champagne when a man shouted, "Ladies and gentlemen, if you would remain seated.  My associates will be moving through the room momentarily, please keep your hands where we can see them. This is a robbery."  I turned to see six men in suits walking toward us, a young human man, the speaker, was holding a gun. "We'll be taking your valuables, then we'll leave you to your dinner."

"You have got to be fraggin' kidding me," I swore in a low voice. I had left my own gun at home.

The thieves moved through the restaurant calmly and smoothly.  That told me it was a bad idea to do anything, particularly given the circumstances. Aria was completely quiet, her hands on the table.  I saw her shiver and noticed her hand closing around her steak knife.  I laid my hand on hers, smiled, and said. "Don't worry."

One of the thieves came to our table, he grabbed Aria's purse, I gave him the credstick I brought with me, and my pocket watch.  He had me stand up, then he patted me down and found the small gift box.  I felt a moment of indignation and saw fear in Aria's eyes.

"There's nothing there." I said. My spell snaked its way into the thief's mind and he passed over the box. "The lady's purse isn't worth anything. You should leave it behind." He set the purse back down and moved away to the next table.  I sat down and kept one hand on the table and the other on Aria's hand.

"Keep quiet and don't argue folks.  We'll just take a few minutes of your time and then we'll be done for the evening." The one doing the talking seemed quite calm. I opened my astral sight and saw that he was very comfortable.  He was alert, calm, and wasn't at all afraid. The other thieves were likewise very confident in their actions.  There wasn't any fear, or anger on that team, just a job they were doing.  I noted their auras, and decided it just wasn't smart to start a fight.

Unfortunately, not everyone was of the same mind.  I noticed a couple, two tables away, both magically active.  The woman appeared to be some manner of physical adept.  The local mana infused her aura, flowing into her body and she practically hummed with power.  The man was a magician. His aura was strong, though not as strong as mine or Creep's.  He didn't appear to have any spells working at the time, but he was clearly very agitated.  When one of the thieves came to his table he made a terrible decision.

"I'll not give you fraggers a thing," the magician proclaimed. "I'll curse the lot of you if you don't get out!"

The thief punched him between the eyes, knocking him off his chair to laying bleeding on the floor.  The woman jumped up, moving with alarming speed, and punched a hole in the thief's chest.  I saw the auras of the remaining thieves become agitated as they reacted.

The thief with the gun, the one doing the talking, fired and hit the woman in the gut.  The bullet blew through her body and hit the reinforced glass behind her.  The glass cracked ominously.  "Now I am very certain I told everyone that this is a robbery." He waved his gun to emphasize his point. He started walking toward the table. "This is NOT a fist fight, or a spell duel, or whatever else you may think.  This is US robbing YOU, and You being damn quiet about it."

The woman was laying on the floor, bleeding from her gut wound. One of the thieves ran over to check on their fallen companion. "Rip is dead." he stated, looking up at the thief with the gun. "She's killed him."

The thief with the gun took on a grim expression and leveled his weapon at the woman lying on the floor.  "You fragged up lady."

Fighting during a dinner date is generally frowned upon.  The last thing I wanted was another body on the floor, and I was a lot faster than the gunman.  I sent out a mental call into astral space, and quickly wove my invisibility spell around Aria and I.  I was pulling her up and away from our table when my earth elemental manifested and engulfed the gunman.  I heard the muffled sound of his gun discharging. The bullet hit the floor and ricocheted up into the ceiling.  I pulled Aria in close to me.

The five remaining thieves drew light pistols from under their jackets.  My little sleep spell wound its way into the aura of the nearest, and he fell in a heap on the floor.  The remaining four brought their weapons to bear over his crumpled form but found no targets.  A quick mental command brought a water elemental, which engulfed the thief on the far side of the room.  His comrades brought their guns about, saw the elemental and checked their fire. The thief near the corpse, the engulfed gunman, and the injured couple called out "Time to leave!".  He crumpled to the floor under the force of a sleep spell, and then there were three.

My earth elemental released the spokesperson for this band, who fell in a heap to the floor with satisfying 'thud'.  The woman he had shot, snatched his gun out of his hands and trained it on the remaining thieves.  "Lone Star police services! Drop the weapons!  Drop them now!" she called out.

Oh fun, a police contractor.

The magician pushed himself up from the ground, an aura of energy pouring out from him, a defensive enchantment of some kind I supposed.  He saw the spirits, the thieves, and raised his hands toward the three men. "Don't make me kill you!" he threatened.  I took advantage of the sudden reversal and ordered my spirits back into the astral plane.  I guided Aria back to her seat, sat down next to her, and let the invisibility spell unravel.  My spirits vanished, and a pair of earth elementals manifested near the magician.  One of the patrons, a distinguished looking orc gentleman at a table with three young children and an orc woman, started clapping.

"Nicely done 'Star!" he said. Applause broke out around the room.

I called 911 and reported that an officer had been shot.  Aria squeezed my arm, and I kissed her on the forehead. "Happy Valentine's Day." I told her.  She smiled back at me.

The management at The Gray Line comped our dinner for us, given the rude disruption.  I thought that was rather kind of them and gave my compliments to the manager.  Additional Lone Star personnel, uniformed officers, showed up as did an emergency medical transport to pick up the wounded officer.  Of the thieves, only one was dead upon arrival, the poor schmuck who got his heart punched out was dead on the floor.  Aria and I were interviewed by another detective who took our statements, checked our identification (mine held up, thank you Angel!) ... {You're welcome ~ Angel} Aria's ID was real and the officer never gave her ID a second glance.  We left the restaurant an hour later than I expected, calmly ignoring a scream sheet reporter that had shown up to get the scoop.  The EuroWestwind rolled up, I opened the door and Aria slid in effortlessly.  I joined her, the door closing behind us, and we were off to our next destination.

{The Lone Star officers made no mention of any other magicians being involved in taking down the robbery suspects.  Which was simply fantastic. The case was pretty much open and shut, with the thieves getting terribly long sentences related to the assault on two police contractors. Bad luck for them really.}

*****

Kelsy Park closes at sundown but there is plenty of parking available just outside of the park itself.  The car pulled up to a stop, parked, and my door opened.  It was cold outside, and Aria had a quizzical look on her face. "Tommy, what are we doing?" she asked.

"I thought you might enjoy this."  Two air elementals responded to my mental summons and manifested before us. "I thought you might like an air tour.  I know its cold.  We can take it slow and fly around the city for a while."

"Tommy Gun, I could get used to this." Her smile banished the last of my tension from the robbery.  The elementals had taken the form of clouds shaped like the giant eagles of legend.  They were powerful spirits, and frankly this kind of thing was probably beneath their dignity.  But the spirits didn't complain at all, and I took that as a good sign.  We flew around Kelsey Park, then overland to the west and out over Puget Sound.  We skirted Council Island (no sense in getting shot at for violating air space) and skimmed the water until we approached the shore again.  We flew through downtown, about five stories up, following the roads and watching the people below.  We were moving slowly, the wind was slight, and the rain had stopped.  Aria laughed and smiled, pointing out sights as we soared around the town.  Below us, there were couples in their limos, or the occasional horse-drawn cart, but we were riding on air itself.  It was a magnificent experience.

{Magicians, take note.  This is a fun thing to do for a date.  Be nice to your spirits though, because some don't like doing this, while others don't mind a bit. ~ T}

We spent a little more than two hours aloft before we returned to the car.

"Tommy, I really loved that!" Aria exclaimed. "I hope we can do that again!"

"I think that can be arranged." I replied.  I bowed to the elementals and they vanished back into the astral plane, their service complete. "I love to fly. One day I should summon an ally spirit though, so I don't have to keep summoning up new spirits."

"I don't know about that, but its fantastic to fly with spirits."  She was smiling ear to ear. "Do you have anything else planned then?"

"Well I thought I would take you home, and I do have something for you." I responded.

We got in the car and took one of the longer routes to get back to her place.  I gave her the small gift box, which she opened with a grin.  There were two smaller boxes inside.  She opened the smaller of the two, revealing a gold locket on a fine gold chain. She opened the locket, revealing the digital photo frame within.  It cycled through photos of our first "date" at the Eye of the Needle, and an image of each our dates since.  The last image file, one I captured that night, showed Aria, floating in air, her arms wide as she soared over Seattle.  The larger box held a gold bracelet, the back of which was engraved in Sperethiel "for a lovely lady, from your beautiful idiot", in all honesty I had someone fluent design the script so that it was correct.

"I love it, thank you Tommy." Aria said.  She hugged me, and we shared our first 'real' kiss as I took her home. I walked Aria to her door and earned another kiss for my trouble.  It was nice.  She walked in, and down the hall to her door.  I waved and went back to the car.

The EuroWestwind took me home.  I had a peaceful trip.  Aria sent me a few text messages saying she had a good time. I invited her over to have lunch at my home the following day, and she agreed.  I was feeling pretty good, and a little proud, for a successful date night.  I wished Aria a good night, grabbed a bottle of root beer from the refrigeration unit (a guilty pleasure of mine), and put on some old flatvid cartoons.

I was being a person, and it was nice.

February 15th, 2059

0600 hours: Angel sent a message telling me that her systems had picked up an image capture of me leaving The Gray Line with Aria after the robbery.  I told her I was fine and thanked her for checking on me.  She asked if I could meet her downtown that evening.  I told her I had plans already, but I would be available the following day if that could work.  Something, "interesting" had come up and she thought I might be available for some freelance work. She said he could make tomorrow work, I thought about it a tick, and agreed to meet her.

We'll save that story for next time though.  For now, I feel like taking a trip downtown.  I need a few things and I feel like flying.

From the Author:

Hello everyone!  Thank you for over 2000 views for my fan fiction.  I appreciate your time and I hope you have enjoyed the stories to date.

There are a lot of stories remaining for Tommy, and probably as many for Shade (another fan fiction series for Shadowrun I've started).  I want to thank you folks for your comments, +1s, and for sharing these stories with others.

I also write and develop role-playing game materials (not for Shadowrun, unfortunately) for other role-playing games.  You can find my work on drivethrurpg.com and you can help support my projects on KickStarter (look for a weapon resource book I'm bringing to KickStarter in a couple of months titled "The Steel Road" for 5th Edition Open Game License *cough*dnd*cough* and in a Pathfinder Compatible edition).

Please feel free to comment!

Tommy was a fun character to play.  He had some deep issues to deal with over his career, and wrestled with whether he was a person or a monster.  Through the course of play he did have moments, such as "Date Night" where he enjoyed a normal life, just being a person.  More stories to come will detail more daring adventures, tragic losses, and magnificent triumphs.

I hope to see you here soon.
